Professor Mark BellisProfessor Mark Bellis is Director of the Centre for Public Health (at Liverpool John Moores University); a World Health Organisation (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Violence Prevention. He also directs the North West Public Health Observatory, the lead UK observatory for health intelligence on alcohol, drugs and violence. Mark heads a team of academics and health professionals undertaking national and international projects addressing alcohol and drug use, violence, sexual behaviour and public health intelligence. He represents the European Public Health Alliance on the EU task force on youth specific aspects of alcohol, is UK Focal Point on Violence and Injury Prevention to the World Health Organisation and directs Club Health (www.clubhealth.org.uk), an international initiative sharing good practice on nightlife health and security. He is a founding member of the WHO Global Violence Prevention Alliance (VPA) and chair of the VPA Working Group on Youth Violence, Alcohol and Nightlife. Mark is a member of the Medical Research Council's College of Public Health Experts and has acted as expert advisor on alcohol and drug use to the Department of Health, WHO, the United Nations and the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction. |

Professor Kevin BrowneProfessor Kevin Browne is both a Chartered Biologist and Chartered Psychologist employed by the University of Nottingham as Chair of Forensic Psychology and Child Health and Head of the World Health Organisation Collaboration Centre on Child Care and Protection in the UK. He has been researching family violence and child maltreatment for over 30 years and has published extensively on the prevention of violence to children. After 12 years as an Executive Councillor of the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN), he is currently Consultant to the European Commission, UNICEF and the WHO. He has worked and presented in over 50 countries worldwide. Most recently, he co-ordinated an EU/WHO investigation on the effects of early institutional care on child development and behaviour and was involved in training and capacity building to deinstitutionalise and transform children’s services across Europe. Nationally, he is involved in the professional training of applied psychologists and the development of practitioner doctorates in forensic psychology. |

John Carnochan QPMJohn is a Detective Chief Superintendent with Strathclyde Police. He has been a police officer for over 34 years, working mostly as a detective. He has been involved in various roles in the investigation of serious crime and in particular as senior investigating officer in murder inquiries. He was, until 2004, deputy head of the Criminal Investigation Department (Operations). Together with Karyn McCluskey, John established the Violence Reduction Unit in January 2005 with the aim of developing a strategy that would bring about sustainable reductions in violence within Strathclyde. In April 2006 the VRU assumed a Scotland wide role and are now supported by the Scottish Government. Their fundamental tenet is that “violence is preventable - not inevitable”. John was awarded the Queen’s Police Medal in 2007 in recognition of his work. |

Janice Cave MBEJanice Cave is the Director of Public Affairs for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. Currently she is head of RoSPA’s communications division which is responsible for all RoSPA’s publicity, marketing and events. From 1991-7 Janice was responsible for home safety activity in the UK. She co-ordinated the development of the National Home Safety Strategy which was published in 1997. More recently Janice was president of the European Public Health Alliance for three years and is a member of the steering group of the European Child Safety Alliance. Janice’s 32 years at RoSPA were rewarded with an MBE for services to health and safety in the 2009 New Year Honours list. |

Andrew ElliottAndrew Elliott is the Director of Population Health in the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety in the Northern Ireland Executive. and responsible to the Chief Medical Officer in Northern Ireland for policy in regard to health protection and health improvement, particularly the Northern Ireland Executive's Investing for Health Strategy. |

Keith FosterKeith has been working in the mental health policy team within the Department of Health since 1998. He is currently seconded to the National Mental Health Development Unit (NMHDU) where he leads on the programme to implement the national suicide prevention strategy for England. Although a career civil servant, Keith has previously spent ten years as a welfare and resettlement officer in a centre for homeless men. He also worked for more than four years as personnel manager at Broadmoor Hospital and as a manager of a day centre for Mind. |

Mike HayesMike Hayes is the Head of Research and Development for the Child Accident Prevention Trust. CAPT works to prevent unintentional injury related deaths and disabilities by informing professionals and those who care for children and young people what they can do to help. In particular, it seeks to narrow the injury inequalities gap that exists in the UK. |

Karen HughesKaren Hughes is the Head of Behavioural Epidemiology at the Centre for Public Health, Liverpool John Moores University, a World Health Organisation (WHO) Collaberating Centre for Violence Prevention. She leads a team of researchers working on local, regional and international projects exploring violence prevention and nightlife health. The team conducts original research, collates evidence of effective prevention, develops public health intelligence and monitoring systems, and provides advice and support to a wide range of agencies to inform policy and practice. She is involved in a number of European collaberative projects working to develop evidence, intelligence and resources for violence prevention and safer nightlife. karen is a member of the Violence Prevention Alliance working group on youth violence, alcohol and nightlife, and lead researcher for the international Club Health initiative which shares good practice on nightlife health and hosts biennial international conferences on nightlife risk behaviour. |

Dr Ruth HusseyRuth is the regional Director of Public Health/ Medical Director at NHS North West and leads the Department of Health North West which is co-located with other Government Departments in Government Office North West. Her remit includes Health improvement and Health Inequalities, Clinical Leadership, Health Protection, Local Area Agreements, Supporting the development of Social Care in the Region and leading RDPH on links with the Home Office, MoJ and Violence Prevention. Previously, Ruth held the posts of Director of Health Strategy/ Medical Director at Cheshire and Merseyside Strategic Health Authority (April 2002- July 2006) and between November 2005 and June 2006, Ruth was also the Acting Director of Public Health/ Medical Director at Greater Manchester Strategic Health Authority. Prior to this Ruth held the post of Director of Public Health for Liverpool (1991-2002). Ruth is Visiting Professor at the University of Liverpool, and Honorary Fellow at the Liverpool John Moores University. |

Professor Ronan LyonsProfessor Ronan Lyons leads the Injury and Environment Research Group at Swansea University. He is also a Co-Director of the DECIPHer Centre, http://www.decipher.uk.net/ a UK Centre of Public Health Research Excellence collaboration involving Cardiff, Bristol and Swansea universities. He is also Co-Director of the Health Information Research Unit, which combines anonymised information from many different sources to support observational and interventional research . |

Bridget PenhaleBridget Penhale is currently Reader in Gerontology at the University of Sheffield, UK. Bridget has specialised in work with older people since 1983, and worked in urban, rural and city areas in addition to hospitals, during a successful 15 year career as social worker and manager.She is past Chair of the British Association of Social Worker's Community Care Sub-Committee, and former Vice-Chair of Action on Elder Abuse. She is currently independent chair of the Hull Domestic Violence Forum. Bridget also participated in a number of projects with the Social Services Inspectorate of the Department of Health (UK government) concerning elder abuse; the discharge of frail elderly people from hospital and older people with dementia living in the community. Bridget is a Board member of the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA) and a member of the UK National Social Care Research Ethics Committee. She was the Principal Investigator of the recently completed Department of Health funded research project on Adult Protection (2004-2007) and provided project management to the UK study on Elder Abuse. Bridget is currently involved in research projects on elder abuse and adult protection, including acting as Academic Co-ordinator/facilitator for the ripfa Change Project on Adult Protection and three European initiatives on different aspects of elder abuse, She is also acting as Scientific Advisor to a Department of Health funded Research Initiative on Abuse, neglect and lack of dignity in institutional care settings for older people (2008-2011).

Professor Jonathan ShepherdJonathan Shepherd is Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (Head of Department 1991-2004) and Vice Dean of the School of Dentistry at Cardiff University. His contributions to public policy, legislation and practice in violence prevention, trauma services and tackling alcohol misuse stem from his continuing clinical practice and research funded by the NHS R&D Scheme, research charities and the Research Councils. He also directs the Cardiff University Violence Research Group. This Group pioneered the combination of police and A&E data as a means of targeting police and other injury prevention activity, prompted a switch to toughened glassware and to plasticware in the licensed trade and set up a prototype care pathway for the treatment of people injured in violence involving a new traumatic stress clinic, Victim Support services and CSP/CDRP-funded mental health nurses who screen for alcohol and other mental health problems and deliver early interventions. Jonathan has delivered new policy and practice as a member of the Welsh Assembly Domestic Violence Task Group and the UK Firearms Consultative Committee. |

Professor Qutub SyedProfessor Syed has been working in Public Health since 1987 and is currently the Regional Director of the Health Protection Agency North West and is responsible for overseeing the development of health protection services for 7 million people in collaboration with other agencies. He was awarded the North West Public Health Award in 2006 and the Michael Chan Public Health Award in 2008. Professor Syed has contributed to the development of the National Centre for Injury Prevention in partnership with the World Health Organisation and has produced a series of international reports on all types of violence. Professor Syed is an Honorary Professor at Liverpool John Moores University and the University of Chester. |

Dr Simon TannerDr Simon Tanner was appointed by the Chief Medical Officer to the post of Regional Director of Public Health – London and Health Adviser to the Greater London Authority in June 2007. Previously he was Regional Director of Public Health for NHS South Central from July 2006. Prior to that Simon was the Director of Public Health and Medical Director at the former Hampshire and Isle of Wight Strategic Health Authority and before that, Director of Public Health with the North and Mid Hampshire Health Authority until it was dissolved in March 2002. Simon qualified as a doctor in 1981 and spent eight years as a Principal in General Practice before training in public health medicine. |

Professor Elizabeth TownerElizabeth Towner is Professor of Child Health at the University of the West of England, Bristol. She is based at the Centre for Child and Adolescent Health, a joint centre with the University of Bristol. She is a social scientist, with a background in school teaching, education and health promotion research. She has worked in the field of injury prevention research for the last 19 years. The focus of her work is on the prevention of unintentional injuries in children and young people and on inequalities in health. She has recently been involved in a number of projects including the national evaluation of the 'Kerbcraft Child Pedestrian Training' project the 'Neighbourhood Road Safety Initiative' and the 'Road Safety Advocacy' project and a UNICEF project to evaluate a community based injury prevention programme in Bangladesh |
