Etienne Krug (Chair)

Since 2000 Dr Krug has served as Director of the Department of Violence and Injury Prevention and Disability at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. In this position he has overseen the development of several world reports and guidelines, major intergovernmental resolutions, country projects, and preparations for global advocacy events such as World Health Day 2004 and the First UN Global Road Safety Week.

He chairs the International Organizing Committee for World Conferences on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion and the United Nations Road Safety Collaboration and is member of the Editorial Board of several scientific journals. Before joining WHO, Dr Krug was an epidemiologist at the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, USA. Prior to that he worked in war torn countries for Médecins sans Frontières and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Dr Krug holds a degree as Medical Doctor from the University of Louvain in Brussels, Belgium and a Masters Degree in Public Health from Harvard University.

Wim Rogmans (Secretary)

Wim Rogmans leads the European Association for Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion (EuroSafe)and is based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. EuroSafe is a unique European network of experts and organizations committed to a comprehensive approach in promoting safety.

EuroSafe is the relaying point for policy makers and injury prevention professionals for exchanging experiences and initiating collaborative actions in diverse areas such as child and adolescent safety, consumer safety, safety for older persons, vulnerable road users, sport safety and the prevention of violence and self harm. The Association is official partner of the World Health Organization (WHO) programme for Violence and Injury Prevention and Disability.

Before 2009, Wim has been for 25 years Director of the Consumer Safety Institute in the Netherlands. The Institute is responsible for a nation wide Injury Surveillance System, risk analysis studies, the development of safety standards and for national safety promotion campaigns. He has been the organiser of a numerous international conferences and seminars. He is honorary editor of the International Journal for Injury Control and Safety Promotion (publisher: Francis & Taylor Group).

Professor Leif Svanström

Leif Svanström, is the Professor of Social Medicine at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm and Head of the Division of Social Medicine. He is also a Guest Professor at Shandung University in China and Ajou University in Korea.

Dr Svanström has spent more than forty years in Social Medicine and Health and Safety Promotion. His main line of research and teaching is Injury Epidemiology and Safety Promotion. In 1974 he introduced the community approach to safety promotion; the “Falköping Model”, that has heavily influenced Swedish and international community safety work. He chaired the First World Conference of Accident and Injury Prevention held in Stockholm, Sweden 1989 and is still a member of the International Organisation Committee for the following World Conferences. In 1991-2 he was a visiting scientist at the Centres for Disease Control, Division of Injury Control, Atlanta, Georgia. At present Dr Svanström is involved in WHO’s Global Programme on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion and is the Head of the WHO Collaborating Centre on Community Safety Promotion at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden.

Robin Ikeda

Robin M. Ikeda, MD, MPH is the Associate Director for Science at the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC), at the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.  In this position, she is responsible for overseeing and directing the scientific activities of the Center and ensuring the quality of the Center’s scientific portfolio.  Dr. Ikeda also coordinates NCIPC’s international efforts and projects.  Prior to assuming her current position in April 2006, Dr. Ikeda served as the Associate Director for Science within CDC’s Epidemiology Program Office and the Office of Workforce and Career Development.  During 1993 – 2003, she held a range of positions within NCIPC, including Team Leader and staff epidemiologist, and worked on a number of injury prevention issues including youth violence, suicide, and motor-vehicle related crashes. She began her career at CDC as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer assigned to the Bureau of Communicable Disease Control at the New York State Department of Health.

Dr. Ikeda holds a B.A. from Stanford University, and received her M.D. from Cornell University Medical College, and her M.P.H.(Epidemiology) from the Emory University Rollins School of Public Health.  She is board-certified in both Internal Medicine and Preventive Medicine and holds the rank of Captain in the United States Public Health Service.

Pierre Maurice

Dr. Pierre Maurice trained in medicine, community health and business administration at Laval University in Quebec City. He is currently responsible for the “Safety Promotion and Injury Prevention” team at the Quebec National Institute of Public Health. He is also associate and clinical professor at Laval University and since 1995, Director of the Québec WHO Collaborating Center for Safety Promotion and Injury Prevention. Dr. Maurice has been leading a team aimed at promoting safety and preventing violence, suicide and unintentional injuries at a regional and national level for 20 years. His team is actively involved on issues such as traffic safety, sports and leisure injuries, falls prevention, child safety, domestic violence, crime prevention and safety promotion in life settings. A number of his recent activities have been dedicated to building links between public health and other sectors, namely the public security sector and municipalities in the field of crime prevention. As head of the WHO Collaborating Center, he is involved in the development of various initiatives within an International Francophone Network for Safety Promotion and Injury Prevention.
