Personal submission e.g. How would attendance at the safety 2010 conference help you to improve the prevention of injury and the promotion of safety in your locality?	As a Masters student in field of health promotion, I am convinced of the explicit link between safe environments and healthy communities. Since moving to Toronto, Canada for my education, I have had several opportunities to examine local policy initiatives surrounding urban youth violence. I am particularly interested in gender/sexuality-based violence, and hope that by attending the Safety2010 conference, I will learn new strategies to assist in the development of a safe streets program for higher-risk neighbourhoods in Toronto, looking specifically at environmental inequities, violence, and barriers to safety experienced by newcomer youth who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. Also, I am experienced in arts-based approaches to information dissemination, and am eager to view the film/photography exhibits, in light of a photo-voice research project that I would like to initiate with an HIV+ women program in Toronto. As I develop my career in health promotion, the opportunity to learn from international policy makers, practitioners, and community programmers in this field would be invaluable. If given the opportunity to attend Safety2010, I will learn from and about innovative strategies and policy initiatives being implemented abroad, and will transmit this knowledge to my school, and to the community organizations of which I am a part. I plan to do this both through seminar presentations at my school about my conference experience, and through integration in the above mentioned initiatives that, while still in preliminary stages, would benefit tremendously from knowledge gained through this conference.
