Personal submission e.g. How would attendance at the safety 2010 conference help you to improve the prevention of injury and the promotion of safety in your locality?
I work as the Programme Manager for a small city in New Zealand that was accredited as an International Safe Community in 2006. I am the only paid member of staff, employed by a charitable trust made up of representatives from local safety organisations (police, fire, health, ACC etc). Much of our local safety work depends on creative use of the skills and expertise that exist within out local communities, often through the use of volunteers. Collaboration is central to all of the safety promotion work we undertake and our local community 'experts' are the drivers of most local injury prevention and safety programmes. The use of community development approaches to a number of our project have enabled us to engage often marginalised groups (e.g. Maori, children, older people) to take a lead role in identifying and addressing the safety priorities that affect them. They have also allowed us to harness and utlize the creativity, passion and energy of our local communities. I believe that by attending this conference our programme manager will be able to tap into a wider knowledge base and gain additional evidence, information, ideas and contacts to support our local community safety projects in the longer term. As New Zealand (most certainly New Plymouth!) are relatively isolated in terms of geography, and population size, contact with others at international level is important. In particular, as our Government is signalling a shift away from supporting the concept of injury PREVENTION this support is even more vital.
