SUMMARY

Aggressive penile vaginal penetration inducing ecstasy, and often degenerating into excruciating pain in women has frequently been revered as symbol of virility and fertility by men in Zambia. Women under the preservation of African traditions have suffered at the hands of men without seeking any recourse.

Attempts by such women to report genital injury-occasioning incidents are often viewed as taboo by traditionalists, while official law enforcement agents frown upon such complaints.

METHODOLOGY

A survey to determine the perceptions of men attending fertility examination on aggressive penile penetration was carried out from June to August 2009 at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, Zambia.

DATA ANALYSIS

The five-item questionnaires on various aspects of rough penile penetration were given to 116 men aged from 21-48 years, (mean=30.6 yrs). Points from 1 to 5 were awarded to men on the basis of opinions on aggressive penile penetration. One point represented the response that supported rough penile penetration, while 5 points denoted the no support option.

RESULTS

Forty-seven men (40.5%) scored 1 point each, while 32 men (27.6%) obtained 2 points each. Twenty (17.2%) men each garnered 3 points, while 12 (10.3%) men harvested 4 points each. Only 5 men (4.3%) amassed 5 points each.

CONCLUSIONS

All participants except 5(4%)men were for rough penile penetration. Arguably the results could be representative at national level. Rough penetration can induce penile and vaginal lacerations for easy transmission of pathogens such as HIV.
