This cross sectional study on intimate partner abuse and suicidal behavior in Nagpur, Maharashtra, India was conducted by a team of volunteers from May 2008 to July 2009, by Medicovet Rural Welfare society an NGO engaged in social issues and health care.
The survey with 1560 families with incidences of suicide and intimate partner abuse reported to NGOs, various hospitals and police offices in the city were conducted using a question answer performa including randomly selected personal interview.
Intimate partner abuse leading to suicide has emerged as a major public health issue in our society. The study found that almost one in 126 people age group 18- 56 years in Nagpur attempted suicide during the fifteen month period of survey.
As per NCRB data report during 1997 to 2007 the population has increased by 19.0% during the decade and the rate of suicides has increased by 8%. Maharashtra has reported the highest number of suicides (15,184) accounting for 12.4% of total suicides
Besides socio-economic disadvantage, independent risk factors have been revealed pertaining to both sexes. Suicidal behavior including ideation and attempt can be used as predictors and critical points for intervention.
Education, social awareness and individual level interventions including strict implementation of law and order agencies for reducing interpersonal violence especially in high-risk groups such as married women and young adults using various agencies like health programs targeting young people and women is essential. An outreach of crisis intervention is necessary in the community.
