Background: Aggressive driving is defined as any behavior that interferes with the movement of other drivers or pedestrians. It is believed to be a great threat to traffic safety. This study is an observational study of drivers aggressiveness in Osogbo, Nigeria.
Method: Drivers were observed for aggressive driving in three selected spots in the town, and under three different traffic situations: heavy traffic, light traffic and weekends. Two groups of drivers were observed. The first were those observed to be carrying out some pre-defined aggressive actions. The second group was randomly chosen control. Pre-defined driver and vehicle characteristics were recorded for each case.
Result: 4433 observations, made up of 1741 aggressive drivers and 2692 non-aggressive drivers as controls. More than 50% of the aggression was prolonged honking, followed by verbal/gesture aggression. Men were more likely to be aggressive drivers (odds ratio 1.35 95%CI 1.042-1.74). Older drivers, drivers of government vehicles and drivers without passengers were also more likely to take aggressive actions. Mild aggression such as honking was proportionately more common in light traffics and among drivers of high status cars but dangerous aggression such as driving against the traffic was significantly more common in heavy traffics and among those driving low status cars.
Conclusion: Certain findings in his study, such as older drivers and drivers of government vehicles being more likely to be involved in aggressive driving run counter to popular belief. The implications for traffic safety will be discussed.
