Objective: To determine risk factors for fatal and non-fatal road traffic events in Cali, Colombia as the first step to promote road safety injury prevention policies.
Methods: A descriptive study was carried on to analyze the road safety problematic in Cali, Colombia from 2005 to 2009. A risk factor analysis using a Poisson model was used to describe the variables associated with fatal and non-fatal events.
Results: An increase in the number of fatal event was observed in 2006 (12.27%) and 2007 (14.79%). Although a reduction in the number of fatal events was observed in 2009 (8.12%), an increase of 5.18% was observed in 2009. 74.83% of road injuries occurred between 7am and 8pm Motorcycle riders and pedestrians are significantly associated with fatal injuries (45% and 38% of the total of deaths, respectively). Young age (<35 years old) was associated to motorcycle injury events and old age (>65 years old) was associated with pedestrian injury events. Male users are strongly associated with fatal road events (p<0.01).
Conclusions: The high number of motorcycles sold in the past three years could be related to a higher risk of fatal road events in this population. A strategy to separate road users was proposed (a line just for motorbikes in main streets) as an initiative to reduce the risk is vulnerable groups. Also, education campaigns when applying for a driving license should be a priority for new un-experience motorcycle users.
