Background Transport injuries were the most important problem in Thailand with death rate 20/100,000 pop. More than half were injured drunk drivers. Methods Injury surveillance during 2003-2006 from 24 sentinel hospitals and reported on severe transport injury cases who were drunk at the time of accident data were analyzed. Results Most of injured drunk drivers were males, 27 times more than females. The largest proportions of injured drivers who were drunk was in the 25-29 years age group, 55.43%-60.02%. The second largest proportion was among 20-24 year-olds. The youngest severely injured drunk drivers were 11 years in 2002 and 10 years in 2003 to 2006.The occupation of the majority of severe injury cases involving drunk driving was police/military men; 65.42% of cases were alcohol-involved in 2003 and then gradually declined. The second and third most common occupational groups among alcohol-involved injury cases were agriculturists and private employees. The most common time of accident was 00:00-03:59 hr, and on weekends. The vehicles involved in drunk driving accidents were mostly motorcycles. However, in 2002, it was minibus; in 2003, it was animal-driven cart; in 2004, it was taxi and train; in 2005 and 2006, it was motorcycles. Conclusion Drunk driving still high proportion in transport injuries, mover children <15 years old had increasing numbers of injuries and drunk driving among the injured. The most common vehicle involved in drunk driving injuries was motorcycle. Recommendations Existing laws on drunk driving, particularly on motorcyclists and children should be continuously enforce and more strongly enforce.
