Sexuality and Violence between Intimate Partners
In the cultural milieu of India, the sexuality and violence between intimate partners would mean the marriage partners, husband and wife and heterosexual relationship. Despite the process of modernization and westernization, the institution of marriage remained as compared to the west. The issue of sexuality and violence is contextualized in the marriage and family. In the recent years, violence between the marriage partners shows an unprecedented increase, in the urban settings. The swelling number of cases being registered in the family counseling centers and the family courts is an indicative of this trend. Against this background, the paper addresses to following set of questions:
1. What are the trends in violence between the marriage partners across different social groups?
2. Which class of families is more susceptible to violence? 
3. What are the characteristics of those violent relationships? 
4. What interventions are to be suggested?
The present paper based on the analysis of cases registered in Family Counseling Center in a metropolitan city (Bangalore) of India. The study found that the violence between the marriage partners and fragility of the relationship were more conspicuous in high income while collared professions. Characteristically, in these families both the partners were working in competitive professions, hard pressed of deadlines, more career oriented and had less time for conjugal life. The family counseling intervention showed that the families of middle class type were more responsive for reconciliation and rebuilding relationships while the families of higher class type showed difficulties to re-establish the relationships.
