GIRLS WHO SUFFER MALTREATMENT IN INFANCY ARE PERPETUATES OF THE VIOLENCE  
Objective: To verify if women who had suffered violence in infancy and suffer conjugal violence is associated with the violence suffered for its children. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in a typical urban poor neighborhood of Embu city, Southeast Brazil, as the Brazilian component of a multi-country survey. In a probabilistic sample of clusters including all eligible households (residents: women aged 15-49 years, son/daughter <18 years), we randomly selected one mother-child pair per household (n=813). Participants: The study comprised 813 families. Measures: Women who had suffered child violence and who were victims of marital violence, as well as their children who were victms of maternal violence. Results:  Among the 813 families evaluated, 37.2% (n=300) had suffered violence during childhood. Seventy-two per cent of these women victimise their children and 25% suffer from marital violence. Also, the women who had suffered child violence and were victims of marital violence are more likely to victimise their children compared to women who had not suffered child violence (OR=2,4; IC 95%:1,1 - 5,3; p=0,03). Conclusion: To suffer violence in infancy is associated with a cycle of violence that perpetuates generation after generation, that is, children who suffer violence have a tendency to behave violently with their children and accept marital violence when they are adults. Future research is necessary to deepen the knowledge about this subject.
