Aims: To perform a systematic review of epidemiological studies of unintentional injuries in children in South East Asian countries in order to summarise and compare the rates and risk factors of injuries in different age groups and countries. Background: Globally, injuries are among the leading causes of death and disease burden in children. The proportion of deaths due to injuries is significantly higher in the South East Asia (SEA) region. However, there is a big difference in the mortality rates within the SEA Region ranging from 65/100,000 (Korea) to 117/100,000 (India) which might have association with injury prevention initiatives of an individual country. Methods: A systematic review using electronic databases will be conducted for the period of 1990-2009. Papers will be reviewed by two persons. The inclusion criteria are: al types of unintentional injuries; Hospital or health clinic based studies; Community based studies, School based studies; Observational studies; subjects of age 0-17 years. This will be conducted for 11 WHO South East Asian countries which include Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Results: A narrative synthesis of results will be conducted. Comparison will be made of rates and risk factors of injury morbidity and mortality in different countries and in different age groups of children. The implications for preventive activities will also be considered. Conclusion: Results of this review will be used in development of a community based study in Nepal for children 0-17 years.
