The present cross sectional study about the awareness of standard precautions was carried out among nurses in a University teaching Hospital in Ajman, United Arab Emirates. A total of 101 nurses took part in the study. There were 11(10.9%) male and 90(89.1%) female nurses in the study.  The mean age of the respondents was 29.595.96 years. Mean duration of clinical experience was 79.3650.29 months. 97.02% of the study population was quite familiar with the concept of standard precautions. There seem to be higher level of knowledge among male nurses (100%) than female nurses (98.9%) in terms of awareness of basic principles of standard precautions. There were only three nurses who have not heard about standard precautions and were with experience less than five years. With regard to the knowledge on infectious waste, 60 (61.2%) participants opined that the blood and body fluids of all patients are infectious irrespective of their diagnostic status and among them 63.3% were with work experience less than 5 years. Among all nurses, 51 (50.5%) had information about the concept of standard precautions from seminars and workshops. Standard Precautions contain the basic principles of all infection prevention and control measures. In the present study knowledge among nurses towards standard precautions is adequate. Barrier precautions can reduce the risk of acquiring blood-borne infections, yet such precautions are frequently ignored, especially by healthcare providers.
