The main aim of the study was the evaluation of psychosocial determinants of wearing bicycle helmets among adolescents to plan effective education. Health belief model was applied. Survey was conducted by self-constructed questionnaire among 212 adolescents, age 13-17 years, pupils of urban and rural schools. Only 9% of the study group used helmets during cycling. Adolescents from families with high socio-economic status wore helmets more frequent than adolescents from families with middle and low SES. Wearing of helmet was related to perceived susceptibility (tau c=0,10), assessment of risk behavior (tau c=-0,10), perceived consequences, such as memory disorders (tau c=0,09) and disability (tau c=0,09), self-efficacy beliefs even if they look bad (tau c=0,12), feel discomfort (tau c=0,17), and peer do not wear the helmet (tau c=0,11). It was positive related to safety feeling (tau c=0,10) and sportive look (tau c=0,10), and negative related to bad look (tau c=-0,14), discomfort (tau c=-0,07) and high price (tau c=-0,08). Education about helmet during bicycle safety course at schools, experienced bicycle injury by oneself or by colleagues was significant too. This behavior was depended on parents opinions (tau c=0,23), and wearing helmets by colleagues (tau c=0,01). Educational programs should focus on changing beliefs about helmets as effective measure in prevention of memory disorders, disability, and learning problems, and increasing perception of individual risk. Its important to strengthen beliefs about sportive look, safety feeling, and self-efficacy in copying with specific barriers such as bad look, discomfort, and peer pressure. Parents should be targeted too.
