Incidence of road traffic accidents is increasing at an alarming rate. A registry based retrospective research, extending from 1994 to 2004 was conducted at the Department of Forensic Medicine, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal. Age and sex are the two most important risk factors in defining population at risk and safety measures. Hence, the study was designated to assess the age and gender based variations in the pattern of road traffic fatalities and make epidemiological profile of population at risk. The data was collected from the autopsy files and information furnished by the police in inquest papers. Road traffic fatalities were broken down with gender and age as co-variables registered in a database and analysed. The study revealed a rise in road traffic fatalities that constituted the majority of autopsied cases (37.1%) and unnatural deaths (37.8%). Male preponderance was quite evident (M: F- 6.7: 1). Road traffic fatalities were reported in all age groups (1st to 10th decade). People in their 3rd decade were most prone to road traffic fatalities (26%). A rise in road traffic fatalities during first and second decade of life and a gradual decline after 3rd decade was evident as the age advances. Minimum mortalities were reported in the extreme of ages. Male mortality pattern was similar to that of overall road traffic fatalities, whereas for females it was almost uniform in all age groups. The overall trend of road traffic fatalities was quite similar to other parts of India and world.
