Abstract Objective: To describe the prevalence of injuries in children 18 years and younger living in Dar es Salaam (DES), Tanzania and to assess factors that contribute to injuries in children. Methods: Fifteen wards in DES were randomly selected and caregivers of children under age 18 were surveyed using an injury event questionnaire. The inclusion criterion was caring for at least one child 18 years or younger living in the same domicile. Four wards were selected for this analysis (n=536 caregivers). The outcome of interest was injury within the past month. Results: Out of 1,053 children, 13.2% had an injury within the past month (n=139). Caregivers who were ill in the past month were more likely to report having an injured child than caregivers who reported being healthy (Odds ratio [OR] 1.8, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.2-2.8). Males were 70% more likely than females to be injured (OR=1.7, 95% CI 1.2-2.5). Only ages 1 to 4 (OR=2.7, 95% CI 1.2-6.2) and 5 to 9 (OR=2.3, 95% CI 1.0-5.3) were statistically significant. Unhealthy children were more likely to be injured than healthy children (OR=1.6, 95% CI 1.1-2.3). Falls (n=71), cuts (n=30), and burns (n=17) were the most commonly reported injuries. Conclusions: These results, while supportive of previous evidence indicating that children in Sub-Saharan Africa are at increased risk for injury relative to other world regions, are not conclusive. Further study is required in order to understand why differences exist between age groups, sexes, and health statuses in terms of injuries.
