Aim: To assess exposure-based risks and profiles of collision vs. other traffic pedal cyclist injuries resulting in death or hospital inpatient treatment Methods: Traffic cycling injuries were identified from the National Minimum Dataset and Mortality Collection. Total time and distance cycled were used as the measure of exposure and computed from National Household Travel Surveys. Analyses were undertaken for the periods 1988-91, 1996-99 and 2003-07. Results: From 1988-91 to 1996-99, there was a decline in the overall injury rate per time and distance cycled. Subsequently, the injury rate due to collision with a motor vehicle remained stable whereas the rate of other cycling injuries increased. During 2003-07, 31 injuries occurred per million hours spent cycling and 242 injuries occurred per 100 million km cycled on the road; 26% were due to collision. The highest injury rate, particularly due to non-collision events, was observed in under-15-year-olds. Males had a slightly higher rate of collision and other injuries compared to females. Traumatic brain injuries fell steadily from 1988-91 to 2003-07; in contrast, there was an increasing trend in injuries to other body parts. During 2003-07 were traumatic brain injuries, other head, face or neck injuries, and upper extremity fractures were most common and experienced by 29.0%, 26.3% and 25.9% respectively of cyclists injured in collision and 14.9%, 16.8% and 40.2% respectively of other injured cyclists. Conclusion: Non-collision injuries occurred most frequently and became increasingly prevalent among children and adolescents. There were differences in profiles of collision vs. other injuries.
