The objective of this study was to investigate the association of family violence to Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in school children of So Gonalo, a city of Rio de Janeiro -Brazil. 
The sample was consisted of 500 children. The respondent were the mothers and guardians of these children. The instrument to assess PTSD was the Child Behavior Checklist-Postraumatic Stress Disorder Scale (CBCL-PTSD). the Conflict Tactics Scale (CTS) was used to assess interpersonal violence and family violence. The children were aged 6 to 13 years old. 
The violence practiced by the mother is associated to PTSD symptoms in children (verbal aggression, minor violence and severe violence). Among those who suffer these forms of violence, the proportion of children with clinical and borderline symptoms of PTSD is 16.3%.The prevalence of PTSD in children who do not suffer from these types of violence is 3.2%. The violence of the father (responsible male) have not been associated with PTSD symptoms in children. The father violence over the mother was associated with PTSD in children (9.9%, p <0.001). The physical and verbal violence between siblings is associated with PTSD symptoms in children (14.4%, p <0.001). Overall, the prevalence of PTSD were higher for children who suffer domestic violence.  The results of this study point to the importance of preventing family violence, which may be associated with various mental health problems, including PTSD.
