Public health leaders have long argued that health professionals have both the capability and the moral obligation to help illuminate the consequences of violence and conflict. Cold statistics alone, however, may fail to activate people or policy changes. Personal stories are often the catalysts that can move decision makers, and can be powerful mobilization tools. International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War's (IPPNW) new "Medical Voices Against Violence" features IPPNW members' personal stories of experiences with violence. It builds on our One Bullet Story series, a successful program documenting the range of personal to economic costs from gunshot injuries. When the story of a Congolese teenager who was shot in the face by diamond thieves was shown at the United Nations, delegate response was that these stories are critical to promoting international action. Medical Voices builds on this concept, telling the stories from the first-person perspective of professionals who are on the front lines of treating victims of violence. We are using these stories to educate about the human costs of violence via IPPNW's "Aiming for Prevention" campaign, to encourage medical community involvement, and to advocate for a health approach to prevention. It is presented in video, photos, and written stories from IPPNW member doctors, medical students and others from Los Angeles, California, to Jos, Nigeria and how they have been affected by violence in their professional and personal lives. Hear from Nigerian medical student Homsuk, whose fellow classmate was trapped in the midst of ethno-religious fighting in Jos; Shannon, a US physician inspired by the courage of a patient who was shot and paralyzed; and Ursula, a German medical student who recounts hearing about a shooting spree at a school near her hometown while she was thousands of miles away in the U.S.
